Tips for Longer Vase Life

There is just something magical about having fresh flowers in the home or office. Between the sweet aroma and the bright colors, fresh flowers are like little bouquets of happiness. While they won’t stay fresh forever, there are some ways you can increase the vase life of your flowers. Whimsy Blooms wants you to get the most out of every arrangement, so we have crafted a list of tips to extend the beauty of your bouquets and maximize the joy they bring to your space.

Tip #1 Fresh Water Please:
Every 2-3 days, refresh your flowers with new clean water, especially if it turns cloudy. This prevents bacteria build-up, ensuring your flowers stay vibrant. Opt for lukewarm water, as flowers absorb it faster than cold water.

Tip #2 Snip Snip:
Tips 1 and 2 work seamlessly together. As you refresh the water, take a moment to trim your stems at a 45 degree angle before putting them back in the vase.
Why 45 degrees? This angle expands the surface area of the stem for optimal water absorption, ensuring your flowers get a good drink and stay vibrant longer.

Tip #3 Placement Matters:
Place your arrangement in a cool, dry, spot, away from direct sunlight. While flowers thrive on the sun during growth, once cut, too much sun can lead to premature wilting. Keep them cool and they will linger a little longer.

Tip #4 Deadhead:
Keep and eye out for any flowers or stems past their prime and gently remove them from your arrangement. Mixed bouquets feature various flowers with varying lifespans. By eliminating wilted ones, you enhance the longevity of the remaining blooms in the bunch, promoting a healthier, longer lasting display with less bacteria.

Bonus Tip :
Curious about flower food? Truth be told, it’s not required if you’re already following the steps listed above. Yet, life gets busy and if you fancy an extra boost, then go for it!
No flower food packets laying around? no problem—a mixture of 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar can serve as a substitute. The sugar aids in opening up the blooms, while the vinegar helps fend off bacteria.
And there you go—four simple ways to keep that magic just a little bit longer.

No need to worry about these steps in the initial two days after receiving your arrangement. We prepare your bouquet fresh, implementing these measures before delivery or pick-up!

Oh and if you just can’t let go of your special arrangement even after it’s outlived its vase life then we suggest drying it! Hang your flowers upside down in a cool, dry, dark space for 2-3 weeks. Once fully dried, bring them down and give them a spritz of hairspray for a lasting keepsake. Note that not all flowers may dry equally or as beautifully as others.
