Dried Not Dead
Fresh floral bouquets hold memories and sweet sentiments that are difficult to just toss away. But here’s the good news: drying them creates a lasting keepsake. Dried flowers not only retain their beauty, but can add a meaningful decoration for your home or office. So, how do you do it and which flowers will dry best? Don’t worry, we got you! Read on to explore our preferred technique and list of top flowers for drying.
How To:
Step 1: Divide and Conquer
We like to dry our flowers the same way we dry our hair…air dry! While there are multiple techniques we find that air drying is the easiest (aka lazy girl approved). When you’re ready to start the drying process, you will simply remove your arrangement from the vase and pat dry the stems. If you have a small arrangement (approximately 10-12 stems) you can just tie up all the stems together using a rubber band or string. However, if you have a larger arrangement it’s best to split your bouquet into two separate bundles. We like bundle 7 stems together at a time. By creating smaller bundles it allows your flowers to breathe which allows for an even drying and prevents mold from forming.
Step 2: Think like a Bat
Once you’ve selected your desired bunch, simply hang the flowers upside down in a dry, dark room. Although its natural for the color to fade during drying, minimizing exposure to sunlight can help retain their vibrancy. After waiting 2-3 weeks, you will have a timeless bouquet that its magic indefinitely. Display your dried flowers in a decorative vase (waterless of course) for a unique decoration or thoughtful gift!
Whimsy Tip:
After your flowers are fully dried give them a spritz of hairspray. This will help keep their shape and keep them from falling apart.
